The Environment and World Politics
Much of God’s sovereign care is accomplished through his Son—Jesus Christ. We cannot forget that the Son existed in the beginning with the Father and that God made the world through him (John 1:1–3). The Scripture reveals that it is through the Lord Jesus Christ that God sustains and maintains his creation (Heb. 1:3; Col. 1:17). What this means is that the so-called laws of nature are simply expressions of the way that God has ordered his creation and sustains it. We can be assured that without God’s constant maintaining care over this world, it would literally fall apart. One of the implications of this is that the big problems that may concern us—the possibility of global warming, damage to the ozone layer, the loss of rainforests, the buildup of pressure in tectonic plates, the depletion of fossil fuels—are all known to him and not outside of his control and larger purposes. We are responsible for our stewardship of creation and God allows us to experience the consequences of our choices in how we steward it. But God is never surprised, unaware, or unable to handle any matter related to his handiwork.
The same principle holds true over human governments. God is not a detached observer, but the most important player, because he is the ultimate sovereign, the absolute King. We know that unrighteous and ungodly people often maneuver their way into power. Consequently, governments frequently oppose God and his purposes, as the psalmist indicates: “The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed” (Ps. 2:2). Nevertheless, God is sovereign over these rulers and governments. He will accomplish his purposes in spite of them. The Lord accomplished this, for instance, through the unrighteous Persian king Cyrus (Isa. 44:28; 45:1). The book of Daniel demonstrates that God knows about the rise and fall of empires (including those of the future), but he continues to reign supreme and will fulfill all of his purposes.
